Description

This bow drill set consists of a drill cap, a bow, and a spindle with a drill bit. The cap is made of wood, with a socket made from a brass bullet case set into it. A projection on top has been shaped to aid in gripping it in the teeth, while curved flanges on either side show that it could also be used by holding it by hand. The bow is made of ivory, It has holes drilled at either end that hold a thong made of hide. Beside each of the holes on the inner face of the bow are circle and dot decorations. The cylindrical drill spindle is made of wood. One end is rounded, probably as a result of having been held in the socket in the drill cap. A metal nail has been inserted in the other end, which is reinforced with a metal collar. The spindle has a slight constriction in the middle where the bow thong wraps around it.
